  • The UK Universities Global Atmospheric Modelling Programme (UGAMP) ozone climatology project. This dataset contains a 3-dimensional climatology of ozone monthly means, combining various satellite observations and ozone sonde data. The data are global and covers 1985. Each file contains a ligne of text followed by the variable itself, in free format. Every single three-dimensional field var is stored as (((var(i, j, k), i=1, 144), j=1, 73), k=1, 47) where i is the longitude index (from 0°E to 357.5°E by 2.5°); j is the latitude index (from South Pole to North Pole by 2.5°); k is the level index (from top to bottom). Every two-dimensional field (zonal means) is stored as ((var(j, k), j=1, 73), k=1, 47) with the same conventions as above.

  • MOHSST, (Met Office Historical Sea-Surface Temperature) is a gridded dataset of sea-surface temperature anomalies covering the period 1856-2006. MOHSST has now been superceeded by HadSST2. We now recommend use of HadSST2 instead of MOHSST for all purposes. MOHSST is only still available in case it is needed for direct comparison with earlier work where MOHSST was used. MOHSST is produced by taking in-situ measurements of SST from ships and buoys, rejecting measurements which which fail quality checks, converting the measurements to anomalies by subtracting climatological values from the measurements, and averaging the resulting anomalies on a 5 by 5 degree monthly grid. Up to 1996 the measurements used are those in the U.K. Marine Data Bank; more recent years use data coming in through the GTS. After gridding the anomalies, bias corrections are applied to remove spurious trends caused by changes in SST measuring practices, and the data are smoothed to reduce noise. The data were provided by the Met Office Hadley Centre.

  • The global CLIMAT upper air standard isobaric surface check values data describe air pressure, normal monthly mean air temperature, dew point, u-component of vector wind and v-component of vector wind, as well as standard deviations of these elements. The measurements are recorded by observation stations worldwide and transmitted within CLM (CLIMAT) Upper Air Normal messages. The data spans from 1971 to 1990.

  • CCMVal was a large international effort to improve understanding of Chemistry-Climate Models (CCMs) and their underlying GCMs (General Circulation Models) through process-oriented evaluation, along with discussion and coordinated analysis of science results. The first round of CCMVal (CCMVal-1) evaluated only a limited set of key processes in the CCMs, focusing mainly on dynamics and transport. This dataset contains LMDZrepro model output from the WMO 2006 REF1 experiment run by the Institut Pierre Simon.

  • CCMVal was a large international effort to improve understanding of Chemistry-Climate Models (CCMs) and their underlying GCMs (General Circulation Models) through process-oriented evaluation, along with discussion and coordinated analysis of science results. The first round of CCMVal (CCMVal-1) evaluated only a limited set of key processes in the CCMs, focusing mainly on dynamics and transport. This dataset contains CCSR/NIES model output from the WMO 2006 REF2 experiment run by The National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES), Tokyo, Japan.

  • The Met Office installed a Vaisala Radian LAP3000 915 MHz wind profiler near Meary Veg close to the Ronaldsway Aiport on the Isle of Man in 2005, relocating the instrument from its former deployment on South Uist which itself followed a deployment at the MST radar site at Capel Dewi near Aberystwyth. The deployment on the Isle of Man was an integral part of the Met Office's UK "Operational Upper Air Network." Operating at 915 Mhz, it provides high resolution wind information from just above the surface (around 300m) up to a maximum of 8 km, depending on the atmospheric conditions. The site is located at 54.26 N, 4.37 W and a height of 55 m above mean sea-level and has a WMO id of 03203. The instrument's hight resolution is 60/200 m depending on the operational mode. It has a beam angle of 15.0 degrees and is operated with an averaging period of 30 minutes. This dataset contains vertical wind profiles from the Vaisala Radian LAP3000 915MHz wind profiler located at the Isle of Man.

  • The Greenland Flow Distortion EXperiment investigates the role of Greenland in defining the structure and the predictability of both local and downstream weather systems, through a programme of aircraft-based observation and numerical modelling. The Greenland Flow Distortion Experiment (GFDex) will provide some of the first detailed in situ observations of the intense atmospheric forcing events that are thought to be important in modifying the ocean in this area (but are presently poorly understood): namely tip jets, barrier winds and mesoscale cyclones. The dataset contains radiosonde measurements from various sites around Greenland.

  • The Met Office deployed a Vaisala Radian LAP3000 915 MHz wind profiler at the Met Office's meteorological station on the South Uist range, Hebredies, from January 2003 to July 2004. This deployment was ahead of the installation of the Met Office's 64 MHz Stratosphere-Troposphere (ST) radar at the same site and provided a period of colocated measurements from the two instruments from May to July 2004. At the time the Met Office's 915 Mhz wind profiler was an integral part of the Met Office's UK "Operational Upper Air Network", providing high resolution wind information from just above the surface (around 300m) up to a maximum of 8 km, depending on the atmospheric conditions. The South Uist site is located at 57.353 N, 7.375 W and a height of 4 m above mean sea-level. The site has a WMO id of 03019. The instrument's hight resolution is 60/200 m depending on the operational mode. It has a beam angle of 15.0 degrees and is operated with an averaging period of 30 minutes. This instrument had been previously deployed at the Capel Dewi site near Aberystwyth and was subsequently deployed to its present location on the Isle of Man in 2005. This dataset contains vertical wind profiles from the Vaisala Radian LAP3000 915MHz wind profiler located at South Uist.
